Family Counseling Centre

aboutimage

The sufferings of poor women are often increased by various factors among which domestic violence by their own husbands and in laws finds major place. The husbands of the poor women are mostly illiterate and many among them are alcoholic. Neither have they known about the values of gender equality nor the legal rights of their women. Hence wife beating, dowry harassment and all other domestic violence are leashed out against the women become the day-to-day orders in the poor families. These ordeals upset the women and the children and they are unarmed to protect their rights. If they approach the police or court for resolving these issues, the men get irritated and the resetting of family ties becomes impossible. In this context Family Counseling Service becomes essential to protect the rights of the women at one hand and safe guard the family ties on the other end. ARDS has been running Family Counseling Centre at Kalakad facilitated by 2 Counselors (one male and one female). They patiently listen to the issues of the couple and sensitize the men on the importance of gender equality and women's rights and guide them to resolve their issues amicably with mutual tolerance. If the issue goes beyond the rapprochement, legal aid is also extended to the women either to approach the police or court. In case of identifying the situation of physical or mental violence against the women in their homes, they are guided to reside in Short Stay / Swadhar Homes.
